How it compares with YouTube
Playing music from YouTube works. But ads play between videos, and suggested videos sit on a busy page that pulls every eye to the board.
This player makes the music in your browser while it plays. Nothing pops up. Nothing needs to buffer. The notes are picked fresh each time, so a long quiet work session never loops the same three minutes. And once the page has loaded, it keeps playing even if the Wi-Fi drops.
When to play calm music in preschool
- Arrival. Soft music as children come in sets the tone before anyone has said a word.
- Quiet work and centers. A low, steady sound helps a busy room settle.
- Transitions. Start the same piece every time you tidy up or line up, and children learn the cue.
- Rest time and nap time. Dreamy pads with ocean or rain, with the timer on.
- The calm down corner. Brown noise on a pair of child headphones gives a child a quiet place in a loud room.
- Breathing and mindful minutes. Pair the music with the visual timer so children can see when the minute ends.
Which sound to choose
Calm piano plays gentle notes over slow chords. It suits story time and quiet work at the tables.
Dreamy pads are long, soft chords with no clear beat. They’re the best choice for rest time.
Music box is light and bright. Use it for arrival, snack time or the end of the day.
Rain, ocean and wind work on their own or under the music. Rain is a good place to start for quiet work.
Brown noise and white noise are steady sounds that cover hallway noise, a humming heater or the class next door. Brown noise is deeper and softer, so it is gentler to leave on all day than white noise.
Rest time and nap time
Start the sound a few minutes before children lie down, so the room is already quiet when they get to their mats. Choose Dreamy pads with ocean or rain, and set the timer for 30 or 45 minutes. When the time is up, the sound fades out over about fifteen seconds. No sudden stop.
Leave Soft chime off for nap time. For quiet reading, turn it on if you want one gentle bell to tell the class the time is up.
Keep the volume low
Keep background music low enough to talk over. Set the volume, then speak to a child across the room in your normal voice. If you have to raise your voice, turn it down. The two volume sliders work separately, so you can keep the rain a little lower than the piano.
Full screen for the whiteboard
Full screen hides the setup and shows soft colors drifting slowly across the board, with a big Play button and the time left. It turns a bright screen into something calm to look at during rest time. If your computer is set to reduce motion, the colors stay still.
FAQ
Is the calm music free?
Yes. The music player is free to use in the classroom and at home. There is no account and no signup.
Are there ads in the music?
No. The sound is made in your browser as it plays, so nothing interrupts it. The page around the player shows ads that keep the tools free, and full screen mode hides them.
Does it work without internet?
Yes, once the page has loaded. The music and background sounds are made on your computer, so nothing streams. If the Wi-Fi drops, the sound keeps playing.
Can I play it during nap time?
Yes. Choose Dreamy pads with rain or ocean and set the timer for 30 or 45 minutes. The sound fades out by itself when the time is up.
What is the difference between white noise and brown noise?
White noise spreads its sound evenly from low to high pitches, so it sounds like a hiss. Brown noise has more low sound and less high sound, so it sounds deeper, like a distant waterfall. It has less of the high hiss, so it is gentler in a classroom.
Does it work on a tablet or phone?
Yes. It works in any modern browser on a computer, tablet or phone. In a classroom, play it from the board computer through the room speakers.
